Most point & shoot film cameras take standard 35mm film. They are widely available for purchase, and typically cost very little. Maintenance and operating costs for these cameras are also very low.
Point & shoot cameras are great for beginners because they are mostly automatic — auto focus (or fixed focus), auto exposure, auto winding, and sometimes auto loading (of course, these features will vary depending on the particular model). These auto features allow you to just get out there and start shooting some film without worrying about the mechanics of the camera. You can then focus your attention on the basic skills such as composition and subject matter.
The downside to point & shoot cameras is the lower build quality — most are plastic boxes with sub-standard optics. You’ll get images, but they might not be sharp as a tack. Then again, a beginner photographer probably isn’t shooting with the intent of printing large format gallery quality artworks.
Here are a few examples of point & shoot cameras in my collection that I purchase locally at price of below RM50.00 only.
Star 200 FF Apparently identical to the Star EF, this camera was also manufactured in China.
